EUIPO: The New OHIM

Being of a certain age, I remember the opening of the OHIM office back in 1994 – online filing didn’t yet exist and we were diligently sending our first CTM applications by fax.  Pages were chugging through the machines and reappearing at the other end only to find that the fax hadn’t been received at the OHIM end.  The OHIM had been overwhelmed with first day applications and had underestimated the demand – as an eager trainee I volunteered to jump on a plane to Alicante to go and file them by hand….

Today marks another significant day in the life of the OHIM – from today, it will be known as the EUIPO.  This makes much more sense as it is the EUIPO and no one ever knew what OHIM stood for anyway.  On the opening day in 1994, we couldn’t get through on the phone as the fiesta had rather taken over.  Today, we have already spoken to an examiner, who answered the phone “OHIM good morning, oh, sorry, EUIPO – how can I help?”.  Old habits and all that….
