Helpful guidance on a father’s right to time off for ante-natal appointments

A new right will come into force on 1 October 2014 allowing unpaid time off to accompany a pregnant woman to ante-natal appointments. This right will apply to employees and qualifying agency workers who are for example the pregnant woman’s husband, civil partner, partner, the father or parent of a pregnant woman’s child and intended parents in a surrogacy situation.

The entitlement is to unpaid leave for 1 or 2 appointments and the amount of time off is capped at 6.5 hours per appointment.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills have published this Q&A employer guide which is well worth a read.
