Shared Parental Leave extending to Grandparents

As if Shared Parental Leave (SPL) wasn’t complicated enough, on 5 October 2015 the Chancellor announced that the SPL provisions will be extended to working grandparents.

The Government aims to consult on the detail of these changes during the first half of 2016, with implementation by 2018. This will only apply to working grandparents as non-working grandparents are unlikely to meet the eligibility criteria. The new system will provide flexibility for families during the child’s first year and prevent the fear of many working grandparents that reducing hours may jeopardise their job. Let’s hope the notice provisions are simplified otherwise I can see employer’s getting in to a muddle once grandparents are included too.

We will keep you updated with the consultation as it progresses next year.

The announcement can be found here.
