Winchester Poetry Prize | Paris Smith continues to support the arts in Winchester

We are once again delighted to have supported the Winchester Poetry Prize. This year the prize was won by Peter Iveson of Salisbury for his poem ‘Mother’s Milk’. The competition attracted over two thousand entries from around the world.

Partner Huw Miles, who presented the winners cheque for £1,000 said on the night, “The arts have a central place in all communities, in all ages and in all parts of the world. The oldest known drawing was discovered in south africa last year. it is 73,000 years old. The oldest known written literature is from the Sumerian civilization in Mesopotamia, dated to 2500 BC – an ode to ancient gods. Especially relevant to this event is the poem “epic of Gilgamesh” dating from the same millennium. the original version is thought to be the world’s oldest known poem. The law firm Paris Smith is a mere baby at 201 years old, but in that time we have always recognised the importance of supporting the arts in our home cities, by maintaining enduring relationships, for example with the Theatre Royal, Mayflower Theatre, and of course with Winchester Poetry Festival.”

The prize giving event was held at the Winchester Discovery Centre on 12th October, judged by poet and novelist Helen Mort, who praised the authors for their fidelity to their subject matter, their generosity, and the vividness of their expression.

The prize-giving was the centerpiece of a day of poetry events including a workshop and reading by acclaimed poet and editor Elisabeth Sennitt Clough, a performance by Winchester’s Loose Muse poets, and a reading from Helen Mort.

Paris Smith will continue to support arts and culture in the areas in which we work. You can take a look about the other work we do in the community.
