Speaker Bios

Nick Vaughan

Nick is a specialist with over 25 years of experience acting for charities and education establishments. Nick has been a trustee of a large number of charities and governor of 3 special needs schools and therefore is familiar with the requirements of clients within the sector.

Michael Moore

Michael is a partner in the Corporate team. He has broad expertise in transactional matters covering a wide range of market sectors including not for profit organisations. Michael understands that combining organisations is not easy and clients can find the experience confusing and stressful. He works closely with his clients to ensure they understand the process and manage to navigate the issues that arise.

Helen O’Kane

Helen is a Partner in BDO LLP’s Corporate Finance team and leads the Not-For-Profit M&A team nationally. She has over 20 years’ experience of leading M&A projects across a range of sectors and has successfully transacted on behalf of charities, private shareholders, private equity houses and corporates. Helen now has a focus on the NFP sector, having led multiple transactions across the charity sector for a number of clients, as well as regularly advising charity boards on their strategic options. Helen has a degree from Cambridge University and started her M&A career in investment banking before joining the BDO team.

John Maton

John is the Assistant Director of Legal Services within the Legal and Accountancy Services Directorate of the Charity Commission. John’s role involves leadership and management of the Commission’s Legal Services division, as well as leading and advising on key legal issues in the Commission’s work. John previously served for four years as the Commission’s Head of Charitable Status, leading a team of lawyers specialising in the law and policy relating to charitable status and registration.

Before joining the Commission John worked as a solicitor in private practice, advising charities, non-profit organisations, regulators and other public sector bodies on matters relating to charity law, governance, regulation and legal structures.
