As we wait with bated breath for the Dilnot Commission to publish their recommendations for adult social care reform in July this year – we cannot help but be worried about adult care especially in the light of the stories that we have seen recently.

The abuse scandal at the Winterbourne View Hospital and the now alarming news from Southern Cross, a care home provider with just over 750 care homes across the UK with 31,000 residents, that they are cutting 10{ba3215b0bf35eaeb06be458b3396ffbfc50bb9db10c9ff1594dfc3875e90ea48} of their workforce.  Part of the blame, Southern Cross says, is due to the falling revenues from the local councils towards the cost of residents care.

Against this backdrop of lack of money and lack of qualified workers, it will be very interesting to see the proposals for adult care reform…and let’s face it – it cannot come too soon!
