George Dale, Paris Smith and Mark Drury, SPUD Group at the site of the build
On 21st February Paris Smith were delighted to attend the ‘ground-breaking’ event with SPUD group, to mark the start of the build of the Handlebar CafĂ©, alongside various other sponsors, trustees, and the Mayor of Winchester.
The idea for the Handlebar Cafe came from a group of local teenagers involved in a project called SPUD Youth. These young people, interested in architecture and place-making, developed designs for a new cycle cafe for Winchester, partly inspired by the creation of a new cycle route through Winchester, crossing the magnificent Hockley Viaduct.
Paris Smith have been pleased to support this community project with our legal expertise. George Dale, Solicitor in the Construction team, who has been involved in the project since August last year said, “for me it has been a unique opportunity to deploy my Commercial Property and Construction skills in tandem, negotiating the lease of the property whilst also putting together construction documents for the contractors and negotiating with funding providers to ensure that their grant funding can be drawn down. This project has involved working closely with a team of professionals to execute a community-designed project using next generation modular construction techniques.
It is always a privilege to work with clients to see their dreams realised, especially on a project which has been slowly coming together over a course of five years. I look forward to visiting in the summer when the project is finished and enjoying a well-earned cup of tea.”
