Manuel Noriega, the former dictator of Panama, has taken proceedings in Los Angeles against the gaming company responsible for Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The game, released in 2012, features (so I am told, I cannot confess to playing it or having any other interest in it at all) a character bearing Noriega’s name and likeness. Noriega says that the game has damaged his reputation by portraying him as a kidnapper, murderer and all round enemy of the state.
We have no right of publicity in this country and so his choice of America as legal forum is presumably based upon the fact that the United States recognise and uphold the right of ‘publicity’. The United States courts are already familiar with Noriega having original indicted and sentenced him there!
