World Intellectual Property Day

On 26 April each year, World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated to raise awareness of intellectual property rights and how patents, trade marks, designs and copyright play an important role in encouraging innovation and creativity.

This year the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) is exploring the future of culture in the digital age – how it is created, accessed and financed, and how those working in the creative sector can be properly compensated for their work so they are encouraged to keep creating. You can find out more about this year’s topic here.

World intellectual property day was created by WIPO in 2000, to celebrate the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies around the world. 26 April was chosen as the date for World Intellectual Property Day, as it is the date that the founding convention, which established WIPO, came into force in 1970.
