Handlebar Cafe Winchester is open for business, following a successful launch on 29 September. The new community café and bike workshop is the brainchild of a group of local teenagers who five years ago worked with Hampshire-based charity SPUD (as part of their spudYOUTH programme) to design a bicycle café.

Paris Smith’s construction team were delighted to assist with the legal aspects of getting the project up and running. George Dale, who worked on the project said, “It is always a pleasure to get on site and see how projects are progressing, as a reminder that the documents I am putting together are allowing clients to get boots on the ground and cranes in the air. The Handlebar Café has been particularly satisfying to watch as the modern modular construction methods mean that this site will go from completed foundations to a fully installed and fitted out building in the space of a few months. ”

On the working relationship with Paris Smith, Director of SPUD Mark Drury said, “It’s been fantastic to have Paris Smith as a key partner on the Handlebar Cafe project over the last couple of years. The support we have received and continue to receive, from numerous members of staff has been superb, whether through introducing us to new connections, professional advice and funding support.  Paris Smith’s role has been key in helping to achieve this community project – especially helping to navigate through some complex issues.  As a small charity we would never have been able to achieve such an ambitious project without ongoing professional support.  Knowing that I can pick up the phone and receive some salient advice has been critical in steering the project successfully.”

The Handlebar Cafe Winchester is located on the old railway track at the bottom of St Catherine’s Hill, Winchester.  There are many other community projects we are involved with.
