Have you sold a second home and not reported the sale to HMRC? If so, beware. Individuals who have sold properties that are not their main residence, and who have not declared any profit on the sale to HMRC, are the targets in a new campaign. Called the Property Sales Campaign, taxpayers will be able to voluntarily declare any unpaid tax on property sales to HMRC by 9 August 2013, and pay any tax by 6 September 2013. After 6 September, HMRC will use information it holds about property sales in the UK and abroad to mount investigations. A voluntary disclosure will mean that any penalty charged will be lower than if HMRC approach you first.
